History

Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton (OFRE) began as a volunteer group in 2009. We rescue fruit in the great Edmonton area which can also include Edmonton, Stony Plain, Sherwood Park, and St. Albert. But the majority of our fruit picks happen in the city of Edmonton because our picks are based on volunteers and their whereabouts and transportation.

As more and more fruit rescue organizations are being established every year in Canada, our volunteers and we strive to eliminate food waste and improve community well-being. Our website provides a list of fruit gleaning organizations throughout the country and around the globe, and if you know of one but cannot find it on our list, please let us know.

In 2012, we ran a pilot project to sell our jams, jellies and apple cider at farmers markets in Edmonton, but we do not sell or make products for sale. We incorporated as a non-profit society in the province of Alberta in 2013. Now we host cider-making parties, fruit preserving workshops, fruit picks, apple maggot workshops, volunteer appreciation events and more.
