Event Details

Got a fruit tree that won’t fruit? Or a berry bush that’s more twig than abundance? You’re not alone. In Edmonton, a lot can go wrong if you don’t plant the right tree in the right way.

That’s why we’re hosting Planting, Growing, and Caring for Fruit-Bearing Bushes and Trees in Edmonton, a friendly, hands-on event that helps you plant smarter and care better for fruit trees and bushes suited to our Zone 3 climate.

You’ll explore a mature, 30-year-old backyard orchard in central Edmonton and get the kind of practical, Edmonton-tested advice that doesn’t show up in YouTube tutorials made for warmer zones.

Max Capacity: 15 students

We have room for up to 15 people. Once it’s full, you can ask to be put on a waiting list for a second workshop a little later in the spring.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Which fruit trees and berry bushes actually perform in Edmonton’s soil and weather
  • How to plant for success: sun, soil, drainage, spacing, and depth
  • Where to buy hardy local stock and what to look for in young trees
  • Seasonal care tips, from spring planting to fall prep and winter protection
  • How to spot and solve problems like poor fruiting, pests, or leaf curl
  • Simple propagation methods like layering, suckering, and basic grafting

Why Local Knowledge Makes the Difference

When it comes to growing fruit in Edmonton, generic advice often falls short. Late frosts, chinooks, heavy clay soils, and short seasons all demand specific strategies. This event connects you with real Edmonton growers who’ve learned—through years of trial and error—what actually works in Zone 3.

It’s not just about knowing how to plant. It’s about learning when, where, and why your tree will thrive—or fail—and how to build lasting success with fruit you can harvest year after year.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why won’t my apple tree fruit?” or “What should I plant in my small backyard?”, this event will help.

Who’s Leading the Event?

Joachim Hengge Joachim is an experienced urban grower who has spent over 25 years transforming his central Edmonton yard into a thriving orchard of apples, pears, plums, cherries, grapes, kiwi, and more. His lived experience growing fruit in Zone 3 conditions makes him the perfect guide for what works, and what doesn’t, locally.

Myrna Peters Myrna is OFRE’s ISA Certified Arborist with deep expertise in pruning, grafting, and fruit tree health. She brings decades of hands-on knowledge to the workshop, helping participants understand how proper care, structure, and timing improve yield and resilience, especially in challenging climates like Edmonton’s. Her energy and clarity make fruit tree care feel doable.

Whether you’ve got one young tree, a few neglected bushes, or a dream of someday growing your own mini-orchard—this event is for you. We’ll walk you through the core concepts that make growing fruit rewarding and achievable.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start growing with purpose, we’d love to see you there.
