Why Millhurst? A Garden Grown by the Community
Sakaw Gardens is more than a community garden—it’s a symbol of what a neighbourhood can grow together. With over 80 plots, the garden transformed an empty lot into a thriving, food-secure space for families, newcomers, and youth. Volunteers built it from the ground up, just like they’re helping press apples at this event.
Come see the garden beds, learn how it all started, and meet the neighbours who helped turn grass into harvest. It was an incredible undertaking and we encourage you to learn about the Sakaw Garden Project.
What Families Can Expect
This is a kid-powered cider event.
Children help mash apples on our pedal-powered Apple Annihilator and press them into sweet cider they can taste on the spot.
Other hands-on stations will explore ways to preserve fruit and reduce food waste—plus a chance to join in the orchard blessing!
🍎 Remember to bring apples if you have them—we’ll crush and press together.
✔️ Playgrounds nearby
✔️ Green space to picnic
✔️ Bathrooms onsite (wheelchair-accessible portable toilet)
Got Apples? Bring a Tote or Two
This cider doesn’t make itself—we need apples from the community! One 25L tote = about 20 pounds. Whether it’s fruit from your tree, your neighbour’s tree, or a nearby donation, every apple counts.
Want to pledge apples ahead of time? Visit our Donate Apples or Dedicate an Apple Tree page and let us know what you can bring.
