Joachim Hengge, Cultivating Edmonton’s Urban Orchards

Joachim Hengge’s passion for gardening and fruit growing began in the rural landscapes of southern Germany, where he developed a deep connection to nature and sustainable land use. After moving to Edmonton, Joachim turned his backyard into a thriving urban orchard, replacing grass with fruit trees, berry bushes, and an abundant garden. His efforts reflect his dedication to sustainable food practices and his belief in the power of local gardening to build stronger communities.

With over 25 years of experience growing fruit-bearing trees and bushes in Edmonton’s unique climate, Joachim is a seasoned expert in urban agriculture.

His knowledge extends beyond his personal garden, having worked with a local fruit tree nursery to propagate hardy fruit tree varieties specifically for the regional market. This work has provided him with invaluable insights into tree selection, propagation techniques, and plant care tailored to Edmonton’s environment.

Joachim shares his expertise as an instructor in Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton’s Fruit Tree Care workshops, empowering community members with the skills to cultivate and care for their own fruit-bearing plants.

Through these workshops, participants learn how to choose the right fruit trees, plant and prune effectively, and propagate new plants through techniques like grafting and layering.

Joachim’s contributions to OFRE align seamlessly with the organization’s mission to reduce food waste, enhance food security, and foster community connection.

By teaching others how to grow and preserve local fruit, Joachim inspires Edmontonians to embrace sustainable practices that benefit both people and the environment. Whether tending to his orchard or guiding others in their gardening journey, Joachim is a steadfast advocate for a greener, more sustainable future in Edmonton.
